Tweed, Espionage and Cloche Hats Pre WWII London 

It's 1938 and budding secret agent/society reporter for the Daily Premier, Olivia Denis finds herself interviewing the glamorous French fashion designer, Mimi Mareau when a German communist is found bludgeoned in the basement of the haute couture house. Olivia’s boss, Sir Henry suspects a leak and assigns her the task of uncovering who on ‘the committee’—a  collection of wealthy Jewish professionals, determined to save as many European Jews as possible—has turned coat and led a Nazi assassin to their door. Olivia having helped Sir Henry smuggle his own in-laws out of Germany is only too happy to lend her sleuthing skills to ferret out the murderer of such a noble man. 

In addition to ‘the committee’, Olivia investigates a wide array of suspects at the Mayfair house of haute couture–Nazi sympathizers, the Duke of Marshburn and his mistress, Mimi Mareau; Fleur, the standoffish chief cutter who recognizes the dead man; and Reina, the mousy head seamstress and possible ex-wife of the victim.

As a style obsessed, WWII history addict, this book was the high fashion point of my day.  And although it was the third book in Kate Parker’s Deadly Series, it completely held up as a standalone. I will now be delving into this series beginning with the first book.
The vivid vintage detail, the gritty backdrop and the intense atmosphere of a looming war transported me back to another era. Five Fashionable Thumbs Up!

Kate Parker has wanted to travel to 1930s England since she read her mother’s Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers mysteries when she was a schoolgirl. After many years of studying science, she decided a time travel machine was out of the question so she found herself limited to reading about the period and visiting historic sites. Her love of this fascinating and challenging period led her to the research from which the Deadly series grew. Eventually, she found it necessary to spend several days in the British Library reading old newspapers, which meant another trip to England. Near Christmas. A sacrifice she’d gladly make every year.

In honor of Mystery Thriller Week, I thought we’d discuss the genre I love reading and writing: MYSTERY. Cozy, Suspense, Thriller, doesn’t matter, these intricate stories all have a similar set of components, including but not limited to a problem solver, a red herring or three and of course a solution. For me, the key to a good mystery lies in the plot. Does it have twists and turns? Does it shock you into suspending your belief? And does the author dole out just the right amount of twists at the right time? Reading a good mystery is like peeking through a keyhole. It’s all about perspective—you are limited to what you see. Not to mention, you only see what someone (the author) wants you to. The suspect is holding a knife over a dead body. Now you’re close to solving the murder right?
